Photographic exhibition in Halifax for Refugee week: 'A Palestinian flavour'. From 14th - 29th June at the Piece Hall Gallery, Halifax HX1 1RE. 10 - 5 p.m. every day. Admission free. This exhibition of photographs, taken by Palestinian photo-journalist Muthanna Al Qadi, celebrates the indomitable spirit of Palestinians in the face of the suffering and deprivation caused by a brutal and repressive occupation. Muthanna sets out to break the stereotypes of the Palestinian as portrayed in our media and to highlight the nobility and resilience of Palestinian culture which survives in spite of their suffering and deprivation. The photographs are accompanied by Palestinian poetry which Muthanna has specially chosen to complement the images. and The Sun Doesn't Shine in the Camp Thursday 19th June As part of the Refugee Week programme in Calderdale, there will be an event focussing on the plight of Palestinian refugees which will incude discussions presentations and a showing of this filmat Voluntary Action Calderdale 8b Hall Street Halifax Event starting at 2pm. The film, about the 30,000 residents living in the Balata refugee camp, will be shown at 6.30pm. Admission free. In this new production, Banner Theatre sets out to bust some of the media-generated myths about refugees and asylum seekers. This live multimedia show combining music, song, video, film and theatre speaks for Britain's newest arrivals as they dodge borders, bullets and bureaucracy in their quest for safety and security from war-torn lands in Africa and the Middle East. "They get free mobiles … don't they?" interweaves a rich tapestry of musical styles – from rock, rap and reggae to blues, folk and jazz – to highlight the real life experiences of people caught up in the whirlwind of the twenty first century. "Made my skin tingle and sent shivers down my spine" – University of Sussex. and 'Palestinian Right of Return' Public meeting at Sheffield University on Wednesday 18th June in Lecture room 4, Arts Tower. (Western Bank, S10: University of Sheffield campus) The talk will start at 6: 30 pm and refreshments will be served from 6.00 pm. "60 Years On, No Solution,Without Return" The talk will be given by Dr Daud Abdulllah. He will examine the Palestine Right of Return, its meaning, legal basis and political importance including the Israeli claims and policies regarding the Right of Return, their impact on the conflict and the way forward. Dr Abdullah is a senior researcher at the Palestinian Return Centre, London. He has published many articles and books on the Palestine Question. His most recent works include, A History of Palestinian Resistance and a chapter on the Colonization of Palestine in a newly published collection titled Islamic Political Radicalism: A European Perspective (Edinburgh University Press, 2007). He has lectured on the subject in many countries and before the UN Special Committee on Palestine. | |||
