Bradford No2ID Dear supporter, Just a quick reminder that our first street stall will on this Saturday (31st May) @ 11am - 3pm, on Ivegate (just next to KFC) in Bradford. Please come along, bring your friends and lend your support. I have cut an interview today for Pulse radio which should air tomorrow (hopefully), just a plug for our street stall and a little about No2ID. We have already had some good media coverage in Bradford, below are our 2 press releases which have been published. If anyone would like to help on Saturday or would like a chat, you can reach me on 01274 413568 or 07931 495421 - evenings are best. Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday 11th June @ 6:30pm at the Bradford Resource Centre, 17-21 Chapel Street, Bradford, BD1 5DT. Kind Regards, Jason Mr. Jason Smith NO2ID Bradford Coordinator ' 07931 495421 : bradford@no2id.net " www.no2id.net Group fights over identity A new Bradford group is fighting government plans to introduce national identity cards. The Bradford NO2ID organisation will collect signatures and give out information from a stall in Tyrrel Street in the city centre on Saturday, May 31. Co-ordinator Jason Smith said: "Many people have heard about the new national identity card but they may not know about the national identity register, which will hold detailed information about everyone living in the UK. "Under the scheme, you can be fined £1,000 if you move home and don't register your new address. We believe that this is against our traditional rights to privacy and freedom. "We are asking people to fill in the petition so that we can send a clear message to the government that the people of Bradford aren't prepared to live in a surveillance society." The group meets on the second Wednesday of the month at 6.30pm at Bradford Resource Centre, in Chapel Street, Bradford. The group can be contacted at Bradford@no2id.net Telegraph & Argus, 24/05/08 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Group fights for privacy A Bradford campaign group has been formed to raise concerns about the role of private sector firms in the collection and storage of the personal details of members of the public. The new group is a regional branch of the NO2ID group, the national campaign against identity cards and the identity database. The group points to findings, in a report by Price Waterhouse Cooper, that almost 80 per cent of firms that have had computers stolen had not encrypted the data on their hard drives as evidence of its concerns. Jason Smith, Bradford NO2ID co-ordinator, said: "We are all aware of the number of government departments which have lost disks containing the personal data of thousands of people. "But this report highlights that these security breaches are not just happening in the public sector. "Yet the government is planning to sub-contract out the collection of our biometric identities for use in the National Identity Card Databases to private firms. "This will lead to a proliferation of the number of organisations which hold our personal information on electronic files. Can we trust them to keep it safe? "Along with other NO2ID groups in Yorkshire we will be actively campaigning against and lobbying local companies that attempt to make a profit by partaking in the government's flawed and unpopular ID cards scheme." The Bradford group of NO2ID meets on the second Wednesday of the month at Bradford Resource Centre, 17-21 Chapel Street, Bradford, BD1 5DT. The group can be contacted at Bradford@no2id.net Telegraph & Argus, 10/05/08 |
